In the course of deregulation of the german electricity market some new value-added steps and organizational forms are created by electric supply companies. A changed environment demands new supply channels and channels of distribution which usually include new risk factors.Within the liberalization of the energy market it is important for the success of an electric supply company to find a cost-efficient satisfaction of energy demand and to optimize the supply portfolio pro rata temporis according to a pre-defined risk. The development of a risk management system should be simultaneous to the setup of an optimal energy portfolio.This topic includes the description of corporate planning and corporate management according to the minimization of risks and realization of chances for controlling purposes. Although it describes and defines possible strategies of action for a balanced price/risk-ratio.In line with this topic a model of the energy spot market was developed. The purpose of this model is to illustrate the optimal behavior of an electric supply company according to the given situation and to support the decision of the energy trader concerning the optimization of chances and risks.
